Wilkins's system decomposes the entire universe of "things and notions" into successively smaller divisions and subdivisions, assigning at each step of this decomposition a syllable, consonant, or vowel. Summary īorges begins by noting John Wilkins's absence from the 14th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica and makes the case for Wilkins's significance, highlighting in particular the universal language scheme detailed in his An Essay towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language (1668). In it, Borges imagines a bizarre and whimsical fictional Chinese taxonomy later quoted by Michel Foucault, David Byrne, and others. It is a critique of the English natural philosopher and writer John Wilkins's proposal for a universal language and of the representational capacity of language generally. " The Analytical Language of John Wilkins" (Spanish: "El idioma analítico de John Wilkins") is a short essay by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, first printed in La Nación on 8 February 1942 and subsequently published in Otras Inquisiciones (1937–1952). First edition of Otras Inquisiciones (1937-1952), published by Sur ( Buenos Aires) in 1952

Bismarck by Jonathan Steinberg6/9/2023 It expertly depicts those turbulent post-Napoleonic decades, and makes a convincing case for the continuing importance of Bismarck. Jonathan Steinberg's astute biography brings the reader closer to both. Otto von Bismarck, his first minister, convinced him to defy the revolution in the air and on the streets so that together they could build the Germany both aspired to: steering a traditionalist course, increasing Prussian might, with the King at the helm and "his humble servant" (humility never did enter the heady cocktail that was the Iron Chancellor's character) as his enforcer. Wilhelm, King of Prussia and first Emperor of the new German Reich of 1871, was serene, gentle, wise, a sovereign who loved his nation more than his power, offering his abdication to move for the greater good. Emperor Wilhelm I was once heard to remark that "It is not easy being Kaiser under Bismarck." The remarkable symbiosis of these two men is at the heart of what shaped central Europe through the 19th century, and prepared the way for the ill-fated 20th.

Akata witch book 46/9/2023 We particularly recommend The Magician’s Nephew as a fabulous read in that series, preceding the story you might already have seen as a movie. It’d also be impossible not to have CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia on a list of books like Harry Potter. In addition to the ones we’ve already mentioned, a few books about magic or magicians that preceded (and may have inspired) Harry Potter include TB White’s The Once and Future King, and A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin. Wands were nothing new when Rowling started writing the Harry Potter books in the 1990s and there had been many books (and movies) about magic/witches/wizards for kids before. There’s this strange feeling when you put down a Harry Potter book-a testament to JK Rowling’s ability to create a world which seems completely real-that you really want to hold a wand and use it to clear up the kitchen or do the vacuum cleaning.
